Caroline O’Leary & Ciara Grant
In 2020, the newly recruited Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpreter team in the Houses of the Oireachtas found themselves interpreting fast-paced political dialogue with complicated jargon. They quickly realised new coping strategies were needed. Aware of ISL glossary projects developed in collaboration with Deaf teaching professionals in Ireland they decided to explore if the same could be done for political terminology.
Trinity College Dublin, the Centre for Deaf Studies, was an important partner in this project. The students from CDS’ Deaf Interpreting training (2020) contributed greatly to the development of the new glossary along a group of deaf and hearing ISL experts, including CDS staff.
Watch the presentation by Caroline O’Leary and Ciara Grant on the wonderful collaborative approach that was taken and the incredible amount of work that went into the development of a new ISL glossary of parliamentary terminology here.
